When and How To Color Epoxy Resin

There are different circumstances that you'll be wanting to color your epoxy resin for a project. Ok, so what do you use? What not to put in resin? How much? How little? There are rules you will find people on Google, YouTube, and social media handing out. Let's find out which ones you can break! READY??? I got you, let's dive in!

The Basics

-Know your product! And if you're new to epoxy, take the time, to get to know your product! If you don't know the basics of Epoxy Resin, check here to learn more. Once you know the materials you're using, you then know when and how you can bend the rules. I believe this is what makes work stand out, in an ocean of epoxy resin projects.

-Mix your resin thoroughly BEFORE adding color pigment, especially if you're new to resin. This makes it easy to SEE if your resin is mixed properly. If you are unsure of how to properly mix epoxy resin check out this video.

The most suggested "RULE" to coloring resin I can think of is: Use the same brand of resin as the tint or colorant you are using. They suggest this because they were made for each other. The manufacturer of both the epoxy resin and the pigment being used knows what they added to each of their products. Simply put who knows what someone else is putting in their products?

Using the same brand will give you the results you're expecting when it comes to curing. No significant changes in:

• Color consistency
• Hardness/ density of cured resin
• Adverse Reactions

Can you use a different brand epoxy and colorant?

Simply put YES! I can count on one hand the number of times I've used the same brands of resin and pigment. That being said, know your product. Time for the fun!!! Let's get into what we CAN add to epoxy resin.

What Can you use to color/tint resin?

Here's where things get fun! There are two main categories when it comes to most "rules" with epoxy resin. Pour art and woodworking. There are things I would use to color a resin ocean beach scene wall art, that I would NEVER use on a river table. Let's break them both down. Here are products I personally have used and suggest if you would like to give them a go.

Pour Art Woodworking

There are people who use acrylic paint in resin, and spices from a kitchen cabinet. They are just not something I would recommend or have personally done myself... Hmmmmnnn..........Next YouTube video idea?

The Takeaway

Simply put depending on which blog or video you watch, that's what's goin to be suggested. I've seen numerous people say don't use oil-based paint, or spray paint. I've also seen HUGE companies Like SCC base their business off spray painting epoxy countertops.

If you're using Liquid tints, pigments, dyes, inks, or pastes do NOT use too much or you will change to structure of the epoxy resin, and will potentially have curing problems. There's a science to this, don't be scared to play, but it can get pricey.
